A US base in southern Baghdad was hit by a mortar round fired by insurgents, which set off a series of explosions from detonating tank and artillery shells that shook buildings miles away.

The 82mm mortar round was fired from a nearby residential area and hit the ammunition holding area of Forward Operating Base Falcon at about 10.40pmIrish time yesterday, said base spokesman Lt. Col. Jonathan Withington.
