Several homes on Sydney’s outskirts were burned in a wild forest fire today, as soaring temperatures and blustery winds gave Australia an early start to its annual wild fire season.

New South Wales state Rural Fire Service spokesman Cameron Wade said a fire burning out of control at Thirlmere, a township south-west of Sydney that backs onto forest parklands, had reached a number of houses.
