Abbas: Palestinian unity government would recognise Israel

Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas told the United Nations today that the planned national unity government would recognise Israel.

The Hamas-led Palestinian government that won elections in January has refused to recognise Israel, end violence, and honour past agreements between the Jewish state and the Palestine Liberation Organisation, which Abbas heads.
