Japan’s new prince, the first male heir to the Chrysanthemum Throne to be born in four decades, was officially named Hisahito today in an age-old imperial rite, national broadcaster NHK said.

Japan’s new prince, the first male heir to the Chrysanthemum Throne to be born in four decades, was officially named Hisahito today in an age-old imperial rite, national broadcaster NHK said.

The infant, who was born on September 6, is third in line to be the country’s emperor.

He was named at a ceremony taking place at the Tokyo hospital where the prince and his mother, Princess Kiko, are still recovering.
