Alliance forces had suffered casualties, including some fatalities, during Operation Medusa, which started on Saturday, said Nato spokesman Major Scott Lundy.

“More information will be released when appropriate, because of the ongoing nature of the operation,” he said.

Afghan forces using air strikes and artillery have killed dozens of suspected Taliban in a major operation in southern Kandahar province, the alliance said.

The Afghan Defence Ministry, citing intelligence reports, said 89 militants had died during two days of fighting.
