Bereaved 9/11 Families suing New York for proper burial
A group of families who had relatives die during September 11 are suing New York City for their loved ones to get a proper resting burial.
The group, WTC Families For Proper Burial, have claimed hundreds of body parts could still be buried in a huge rubbish tip on nearby Staten Island, where 414,000 tons of debris from Ground Zero were taken in the clean-up operation.
Also, they are furious that dust-like material from the site, known as "fines", which contains particles of blood, bone and human ashes mingled with ground-up cement and pulverised glass from the collapsed buildings, has been left on top of normal rubbish in the landfill.
They are demanding that the city sift through the solid material looking for body parts – and move the ashen dust to another site to be interred.
The impact of the jetliners crashing into the towers was so immense that DNA from one passenger was later discovered 10 blocks north of the site.
Only 294 bodies were found whole, and only 1,151 families - fewer than half - have been given any identifiable remains.
