A man is being questioned on suspicion of terrorism offences after a raid on a house in the UK, police said today.

The man, 27, was seized in a raid on the house on Elmfield Street, Cheetham Hill, Greater Manchester, yesterday and is being held under the Terrorism Act.

The house is now being searched, a spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said.

The arrest is not related to the continuing investigation into the alleged plot to blow up transatlantic airliners, he said.

“Greater Manchester Police’s Anti-Terrorist Unit yesterday, Wednesday, August 23, arrested one person and is currently searching an address with a warrant under the Terrorism Act 2000,” he said.

“The arrest took place on Elmfield Street shortly after 5pm and a search is ongoing at a house in Elmfield Street, Cheetham Hill.

“It is in connection with an ongoing investigation and has been carried out acting on intelligence. Six officers carried out the arrest.”
