Sri Lanka: Red Cross ferry to evacuate foreign nationals

The International Committee of the Red Cross today said it would send a passenger ferry to northern Sri Lanka to evacuate foreign nationals.

The ferry will pick up international aid workers and other foreign passport holders who were trapped in northern Jaffna Peninsula by the recent escalation of fighting, said Yvonne Dunton, head of the ICRC’s eastern Trincomalee division.

“We are still putting together the passenger list, but the maximum number should be about 150,” she said.
