At least 23 people were killed in Guatemala today when a bus plunged over a cliff after losing its brakes and unsuccessfully trying to exit off an emergency ramp.

The deadly crash, which also injured more than 50 people, happened on the Palin-Escuintla highway that runs from the capital Guatemala City to southern Guatemala, said police official Selvin Oxlaj.

ā€œWe know that the bus had problems with its brakes and tried to use a deceleration ramp on the highway, but it couldn’t stop in time and fell over the cliff,ā€ Oxlaj said.

The nature of the survivors’ injuries was not known. No other details of the crash were immediately available.
