Twenty-three killed in Guatemala bus crash

At least 23 people were killed in Guatemala today when a bus plunged over a cliff after losing its brakes and unsuccessfully trying to exit off an emergency ramp.

The deadly crash, which also injured more than 50 people, happened on the Palin-Escuintla highway that runs from the capital Guatemala City to southern Guatemala, said police official Selvin Oxlaj.

“We know that the bus had problems with its brakes and tried to use a deceleration ramp on the highway, but it couldn’t stop in time and fell over the cliff,” Oxlaj said.

The nature of the survivors’ injuries was not known. No other details of the crash were immediately available.
