China's typhoon death toll rises to 214

China’s death toll from Typhoon Saomai rose to at least 214 today after a hard-hit province announced it had confirmed 80 more fatalities.

Fujian province’s storm death toll rose to 125, the provincial Water Resources Bureau said on its website, with more than 100 people still missing.

The province earlier had reported a total of 45 deaths from Saomai, which levelled thousands of houses last week, sank fishing boats and blacked out six cities.

Elsewhere, Chinese authorities earlier reported 87 deaths in neighbouring Zhejiang province and two in the inland province of Jiangxi.
