A train ploughed through a bus on a railway crossing in northern Bangladesh on today, killing at least 33 people and injuring many more.

The accident occurred in Jaipurhat district, 130 miles north of the national capital Dhaka, said the area’s government administrator Amar Chand Banik.

The victims were all on the bus, he said.

Mohammad Omar Faruk, an official at state-run Bangladesh Railway in Dhaka, said rescue workers had been sent to the site of the accident.

Police and fire brigade workers recovered at least 33 bodies from the wreckage of the bus, according to Shahjahan Siraj, a local reporter at the scene.

The death toll was likely to increase, because more bodies were believed trapped inside the twisted bus, he said, quoting rescue workers.
