India bus accident kills 26

A bus has plunged into a gorge in northern India, killing 26 people and wounding eight, police have said.

The bus was travelling in the mountainous northern state of Uttaranchal when it went off the road, plunging into the Bhagirathi River below, said a local police chief.

It was not immediately clear what caused the accident, but overcrowding, reckless driving and ageing vehicles are blamed for most of the numerous accidents on Indian roads.
