Dutch prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende tendered his Cabinet’s resignation to Queen Beatrix today, a move that will ultimately lead to new elections.

His government collapsed yesterday, after infighting following a failed attempt to strip former politician Ayaan Hirsi Ali, the country’s best known critic of Islam, of her citizenship.
