Abbas announces referendum on Palestinian state

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said today he would hold a referendum on July 26 on the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel.

He made the declaration despite pleas by the ruling Hamas party to hold off on the vote and rising tensions in the area.
