Slobodan Milosevic defied doctors’ orders to quit smoking and took smuggled medication, an internal report said today, clearing the tribunal of giving inadequate medical care that might have led to the prisoner’s death.

The internal investigators said the former Yugoslav president also kept medical information secret from his judges at the tribunal in The Hague, where he was extradited in 2001 to stand trial on 66 counts of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
