British human rights lawyer denied entry to Israel

A British human rights lawyer returned to London today after being denied entry into Israel.

Kate Maynard, who works with the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights, was detained when she landed in Israel on Wednesday.

She was held and “subjected to intensive and intrusive questioning”, her law firm Hickman and Rose said in a statement.

Although an Israeli court recommended yesterday that authorities allow Maynard to enter the country, the Interior Ministry ordered that she be deported, the firm said.

Maynard had been involved in a case against a retired Israeli general, Doron Almog, alleging he was involved in war crimes against Palestinians.

An arrest warrant against Almog issued in the case forced him to leave Britain in September.
