Boy, 7, joins Alcatraz swim elite
A seven-year-old boy who has become one of the youngest people to swim from Alcatraz to San Francisco says his next ambition is to conquer the English Channel.
Braxton Bilbrey crossed the 1.4-mile stretch between the city and the infamous prison island in just 47 minutes.
The little boy, from Glendale, Arizona, got the idea for the challenge when he read a magazine article about a nine-year-old who had made the swim.
“I think it’s pretty cool,” he said after being helped out of the water, which was in the mid-50s Fahrenheit
His father Steve said: “He did great. He looked so strong. He did so awesome. I’m so proud of him.”
It may be a while before Braxton can achieve his next dream.
The Dover-Calais route across the English Channel is about 21 miles long.
