Trapped miners rescued after nearly two weeks

Two Australian miners trapped underground for almost two weeks have been freed after a massive rescue effort, the manager of the mine said tonight.

Matthew Gill, manager of the Beaconsfield Gold Mine in Tasmania, said Brant Webb, 37, and Todd Russell, 34 – who have been lodged in a steel cage beneath tons of fallen rocks since April 25 – were removed through a tunnel.

Both men were well, Gill said.

Rescuers have toiled for more than a week to free them.
