EU Commission considers direct aid to Abbas, bypassing Hamas
The EU Commission is considering sending aid to moderate Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, bypassing the Palestinians’ Hamas-led government, an Israeli newspaper reported today.
The Haaretz said it had obtained an EU document outlining the proposal. Under the plan, aid would be sent to Abbas for specific purposes, such as health and education in the West Bank and Gaza, in order to delay a collapse of the cash-starved Palestinian Authority.
