Nepal king promises to return power to the people

Nepal’s king today vowed to return political power to the people of the Himalayan kingdom, 14 months after he seized control and set off a political crisis that has left his government increasingly unstable.

Exactly how such a transfer of power would take place, however, was not clear, and it remained unclear if the move would satisfy his political opponents, who have filled the streets of the kingdom with tens of thousands of protesters for days on end.
