A London-bound Olympic Airlines passenger jet turned back shortly after take-off from Athens Airport today due to a malfunctioning smoke alarm, the Greek airline said.

The Airbus A-340, flying to Heathrow, landed without incident at 2.30pm (1.30pm Irish time).

It was carrying about 300 passengers and crew, said airline officials.

An Olympic Airlines spokeswoman said a smoke alarm went off 20 minutes after take-off, but an inspection later showed there was no problem.

The plane was due to resume its flight later in the afternoon.
