Austria’s mountains claimed 207 lives in 2005, exceeding the yearly average of 189, the national mountain rescue organisation said today.

Among the dead were 41 skiers and snowboarders who died in avalanches while skiing off-piste, the highest number in the 30 years such records have been kept, the Austria Press Agency reported, quoting statistics from the organization.
