One dead as anti-Bush protest sets off Hindu-Muslim clash

A protest against the visit to India by US President George Bush turned into a clash today between Hindus and Muslims that left one person dead and 12 injured.

The violence in the city of Lucknow erupted when dozens of armed Muslims tried to force Hindu shopowners to shut their stores to protest against Bush’s visit, said Senior Superintendent of Police Ashutosh Pandey.

The clash came amid anti-Bush demonstrations in various Indian cities by communists and Muslim groups, which had demanded he not be allowed into the country.
