Vengeance call as Turkish Muslims attack French consulate
About 150 ultra-nationalist Turks, chanting “vengeance” pelted the French consulate in Istanbul with eggs today in the latest protest against the publication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed.
Police blocked some of the protesters who attempted to storm the consulate building in central Istanbul, private NTV television said. The group dispersed peacefully after chanting slogans and issuing a statement to denounce the caricatures, which have caused outrage in the Muslim world.
“Tooth for tooth, blood for blood, vengeance!” some demonstrators chanted in footage shown by the Cihan News Agency.
The group in the footage also shouted: “Hands that reach the Prophet must be broken,” and “God is great!”
Several newspapers and magazines in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the US - including at five French newspapers – have published the cartoons.
