A roadside bomb blast has killed two US Marines near the western Anbar province city of Fallujah, the military said today.

The victims, assigned to 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, were killed yesterday when an explosion targeted their patrol during combat operations near Fallujah, 40 miles west of Baghdad.

The deaths take the number of U.S. military personnel killed to at least 2,269 since the Iraq war began in March 2003.

Fallujah became one of Iraq’s most tightly controlled cities following a November 2004 US-led offensive that was thought to have flushed out militants operating in the one-time insurgent stronghold.
