US prisoner executed

Perrie Dyon Simpson was executed today for the 1984 murder of a retired minister, the North Carolina Department of Correction said.

Simpson, 43, was pronounced dead at 2.17am (7.17am Irish time), said spokesman Keith Acree.

The execution came after Governor Mike Easley rejected Simpson’s clemency request yesterday evening and after the US Supreme Court rejected his appeal.
