The Turkish gunman who shot Pope John Paul II in 1981 wants to put the assassination attempt behind him after his release from prison this week, and wants to work for world peace, his lawyer said today.

“He says ‘I want to work extend peace and brotherhood to everyone, I want to work for democracy and culture’,” Mustafa Demirbag, the lawyer for Mehmet Ali Agca, said ahead of Agca’s release tomorrow.
