A suicide attacker blew up explosives strapped to his body in a central Afghan town today during a visit by the US ambassador, and 10 Afghan civilians were believed to be killed or wounded.

The attack happened about a quarter of a mile from the governor’s house in Tirin Kot town, Uruzgan province, said Abdullah Khan, the governor’s spokesman.

The ambassador and other US officials were inside the building at the time and were unhurt, he said.

Khan said at least 10 people were believed killed or wounded.
