UN official: Iraqi elections are credible
A United Nations official today described contested elections for Iraq’s new parliament as transparent and credible, and said there was no justification in calls for a rerun.
The official, Craig Jenness, told a news conference organised by the Independent Electoral Commission of Iraq that the UN-led international election assistance team found the elections to be credible.
“The United Nations is of the view that these elections were transparent and credible. Turnout was high and the day was largely peaceful, all communities participated.”
