The king of the tiny Himalayan nation of Bhutan has declared that he will step down as ruler and hold the country’s first national democratic elections in 2008, state media reported today.

King Jigme Singye Wangchuck said that he will be succeeded by his son, the crown prince, according to the government-owned newspaper Kuensel.
