Police today arrested a 30-year-old man believed to have killed his two daughters, aged two and seven, before he threatened to jump off Denmark’s longest bridge.

The man, who was not identified, called police in the southern city of Svendborg, saying he had done “something terrible”, said police spokesman Henrik Jutesen.

Officers arriving at his home found the two girls stabbed to death. Police later found the man on the nearby Storebaelt Bridge where he threatened to jump into the sea.

The 11-mile bridge, which is 250 feet above sea level at its highest point, was briefly closed as police persuaded the man not to jump.

Police were questioning the man and his estranged wife to find a motive for the killings. Svendborg is 102 miles south-west of Copenhagen.
