Denmark wants to create UN ombudsman for terror lists

Denmark, which holds a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council, wants to create a United Nations ombudsman whose job will be to scrutinise the names on the world body’s terrorist lists.

The ombudsman would remove names if necessary, Danish Foreign Minister Per Stig Moeller said today.

“If you somehow have been placed on the terror list and you feel totally misplaced, you need to be able to get off it,” Moeller said.

“An ombudsman should be able to gauge whether the complaint is founded,” he said. “It is very difficult to get off the list if you have landed there by mistake.”

The Danish proposal will be presented to the Security Council next year.
