Putin congratulates new German chancellor

President Vladimir Putin today congratulated Angela Merkel on her election as Germany’s chancellor and invited her to visit Russia.

In a statement issued by the Kremlin, Putin said: “I am sure that the movement toward further deepening of our strategic partnership that was confirmed in the course of our meeting not long ago in Berlin serves the interest of the two peoples and security and economic progress in Europe.
