The United Nations today nearly doubled its appeal for donations for victims of the south Asia earthquake to $550m (€455.7m) at a donors' conference.

“It has quickly become evident that this disaster is much bigger than first assumed,” said an official in explaining the need to raise the appeal from $312m (€258.5m).
