A car bomb exploded near a mosque in southern Afghanistan, killing a deputy provincial police chief and one of his bodyguards, officials said today.

A car bomb exploded near a mosque in southern Afghanistan, killing a deputy provincial police chief and one of his bodyguards, officials said today.

A second bodyguard was wounded in the blast as Nafus Khan, the deputy police chief of Nimroz province, was parking his car next to a mosque late yesterday, said Ghulam Dastaqir, the province's governor.

He blamed the attack on Taliban rebels.
