Police in Shanghai are investigating an online advertisement on the Chinese subsidiary of eBay offering babies for sale, it was reported today.

The ad was placed this month on a site run by Eachnet.com, the China Daily newspaper said. It quoted an Eachnet manager as saying it was not clear whether the ad was real or a practical joke.
