An earthquake of preliminary magnitude 4.8 shook the southern Greek island of Rhodes early today, causing no injuries or damage.

The Athens Geodynamic Institute said the undersea quake occurred at 8.47am local time (6.47am Irish time) in the Aegean Sea off Rhodes, about 280 miles north-east of Athens.

An earthquake of magnitude between 2.5 and three is the smallest generally felt by people.

A quake of magnitude four to five can cause moderate damage in populated areas.
