Merkel to be German Chancellor - report
Angela Merkel is to become German Chancellor, according to news agency Reuters.
Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and conservative rival Merkel were to report back to their parties today as they searched for a power-sharing deal to end Germany’s three-week political stalemate – and finally decide which of them will lead the country.
Talks aimed at forging a so-called “grand coalition” between Merkel’s conservatives and Schroeder’s Social Democrats broke off after about three and a half hours late yesterday without an announcement. Both sides had vowed to maintain a public silence until a deal is complete.
