Up to 1,000 people are feared dead after a magnitude 7.6 earthquake jolted south Asia today, collapsing buildings and triggering landslides.

Several villages in northern Pakistan were buried in landslides triggered by the quake, said Maj. Gen. Shaukat Sultan, the Pakistani army's chief spokesman.
