US soldier dies in Iraq

A US soldier has died of gunshot wounds suffered in western Iraq, the military announced today.

The 56th Brigade Combat Team soldier was shot yesterday morning near Taqaddum, a town close to the city of Fallujah and about 40 miles west of Baghdad.

The name of the soldier was being withheld pending notification of relatives.

The attack raised to at least 1,937 the number of US military members who have died since the US-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003.
