12 killed as police fire on stone-throwing students

Police opened fire on stone-throwing students in two towns in north-eastern India today, killing 12 people, authorities said.

More than 100 other people, including 54 police, were injured in the two protests, both of which turned violent when the students began throwing stones and attacking officers.
