Explosion heard in central Baghdad

A loud explosion was heard in central Baghdad today. Thick black smoke was seen rising from the direction of the heavily fortified Green Zone, home to government offices, foreign embassies and the US military.

The US military later said it was a controlled detonation. The Army routinely destroys weapons and ammunition confiscated during raids on suspected insurgents in and around Baghdad.
