A prisoner who was having marital problems killed his wife during a conjugal visit in a Costa Rican jail, officials said.
Jose Francisco Ortiz, 41, was arrested for the murder of Maria Guadalupe Cordoba, 49, who was visiting her husband yesterday at La Leticia penitentiary about 30 miles north-east of the capital, San Jose.
Ortiz had been serving a 40-year prison sentence for murdering his own 13-year-old daughter in 1997, officials said. He married Cordoba three years ago while he was in prison.
The couple were experiencing marital problems for the past few months, relatives of Cordoba told Channel 7.
Cordoba’s body was found in one of the nine rooms set aside for conjugal visits. Justice Department spokeswoman Laura Quesada said officials believe she was suffocated or strangled, but added that further investigation was needed to confirm the cause of death.
Ortiz was sent to a hospital to be treated for various apparently self-inflicted superficial knife wounds.
