Indonesian plane crash death toll rises to 143

An Indonesian passenger jet which crashed into a crowded residential neighbourhood in the city of Medan has killed 143 people.

The Mandala Airlines Boeing 737 was en route from Medan to Jakarta when it crashed seconds after take-off and burst into flames.

Dozens of houses were set alight or damaged and a search and rescue official said at least 30 people were killed on the ground.

They also said 15 people had survived the crash.

Mandala Airlines said the plane was carrying at least 117 passengers and crew at the time of the crash, including the governor of North Sumatra province, who was travelling to Jakarta for a meeting with the President.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
