US President George Bush is expected to visit storm-ravaged areas of the Gulf Coast later this week, but first he is returning to Washington to oversee the federal response to Hurricane Katrina.

Bush cut short his month-long holiday, heading back to Washington two days early even though the White House has long contended his duties are uninterrupted when he spends time at his technologically equipped ranch in Crawford, Texas.
