Katrina smashes into New Orleans

Hurricane Katrina smashed into New Orleans today, knocking out power and submerging part of the low-lying city in up to 6ft of water.

At least three British tourists were among the 10,000 people seeking refuge in the US city’s 77,000-seat Superdome, which had part of its roof ripped off by winds topping 140mph.
