Unidentified gunmen shot and killed a senior police officer in eastern Baghdad today, as insurgents kept up their attacks on members of Iraq’s new security forces, police said.

Brigadier General Numan Salman Faris, director of Azamiyah district rapid response force, was shot by gunmen in eastern Baghdad, police Major Thamir Al-Sadir said. He gave no further details.
