UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan is today expected in Niger to focus international attention on a one of the worst food crises' in many years.

The United Nations says drought and locusts in Niger have left some 5 million people facing severe food shortages.

Annan’s first stop will be the western city of Zinder, one of several areas in Nger hard-hit by the food crisis, said Katy Thiam, a UN information officer.

Annan will visit Zinder’s main hospital, a feeding centre and speak to officials and humanitarian workers.

Tomorrow, he’s due about 460 miles east in the capital, Niamey, for talks with President Mamadou Tandja and other top officials before leaving the same day.
