Nine dead in prison riot

Nine inmates died in a Venezuelan prison riot that ended only when the National Guard stormed in, the interior ministry said today. Some of the inmates were shooting at each other with guns that were apparently smuggled in.

The riot, in which five inmates were wounded, broke out on Wednesday after a confrontation between members of rival gangs at La Pica prison in eastern Monagas state.
