56 killed as bus plunges off bridge

A passenger bus skidded off a bridge and tumbled into a river in northern Nigeria today, killing 56 people aboard, officials said.

The bus, which began its overnight journey in the southern city of Lagos, careered off the Tamburaw Bridge outside the northern city of Kano, crashed into the river just before dawn, said Ibrahim Kano, a regional traffic official.
